Our plan finder applies Louisiana's 31.9% rate to every carrier that bills tax separately, so you compare what you would actually pay rather than what gets advertised. It takes about two minutes and is free.
Find my real priceWhat makes up the 31.9%
- Federal Universal Service Fund (13.36%): a federal charge carriers pass through to subsidise phone service in rural areas, schools and libraries. It is the same everywhere in the US and it moves quarterly.
- State and local wireless taxes (18.5%): sales tax, state telecom taxes, 911 fees and, in some states, a 988 crisis-line fee. This is the part that varies by where you live.
How to pay less tax in Louisiana
You cannot negotiate the rate, but you can change what it applies to. Two practical moves:
- Pick a carrier that includes tax in its price. Cricket, Visible and US Mobile advertise all-in prices, so what you see is what you are billed. That does not necessarily make them cheaper overall, but it removes the surprise.
- Lower the bill the tax sits on. A percentage applies to whatever you spend, so moving from a $60 plan to a $30 plan saves you $9.57/month in tax on top of the $30 you already saved: $474.84 a year in total.

Rates are combined federal, state and local wireless taxes from the Tax Foundation's annual study of wireless taxes and fees (2025 edition, rates as of July 2025). Local rates vary within a state, so treat this as a close estimate of a typical bill rather than a quote. We are independent and not affiliated with any carrier.
